Yiradhu marang. Good Day. Welcome.
I am Bernard Higgins – a Wiradyuri man, creative practitioner, and researcher living and working on my ancestral lands of Wagga Wagga and Leeton. Through animation, film, and language, I work with community to tell stories that matter: stories of survival, legacy, and hope.
When I created this book and animation, "Being Wiradjuri, I was still using the spelling Wiradjuri. Since then after discussions with Elders within my family, as well as Uncle Stan Grant, Sr, I have been using the more correct spelling Wiradyuri. Some of our old people even remember it as Yuradyuri!
The dy sound in Wiradyuri language sounds very similar to the J sound in English.
People can choose to spell it however they wish to. I acknowledge it can be hard to change when we have used the Wiradjuri spelling for most of our lives. I choose to use the Wiradyuri spelling for consistency and as an act of language reclamation.
